Gum Disease
Gingivitis is a reversible form of gum disease caused by the build-up of plaque. Gingivitis is a non-destructive inflammation of the gums. Patients may experience red swollen gums that bleed easily after brushing, bad breath and plaque buildup.
Some Risk factors for Gingivitis include:
- Diabetes
- Stress
- Smoking
- Medications that cause dry mouth
- Poor oral hygiene
- Changes in hormones caused by Birth control
- Pregnancy and Menopause can also be a contributing factor
If Gingivitis is left untreated it can cause a more serious disease called Periodontitis.
Periodontitis is a non-reversible form of gum disease in which spreads to the underlying tissue where the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost and the teeth can loosen or even fall out. Tartar buildup can spread below the gum line which makes it harder to clean so that is where a dental professional comes in as they are the only ones who can remove the tartar from below the gum line.
If gum disease is left untreated the bacteria in your mouth can travel to other parts of your body through the bloodstream. Gum disease can put you at risk for Diabetes, Heart disease, or even stroke.
Tips for Preventing Gum Disease
- Brushing and Flossing 2x Daily
- Having a professional cleaning 2x per year
- Limiting sugar intake
- Using a mouthwash with Fluoride such as ACT
What Are My Treatment Options for Periodontal Disease?
The Dental Hygienist has many roles when it comes to patients. In my opinion educating the patient on proper homecare is the most important. Promoting overall health, oral cancer screenings and providing support during dental visits are other important roles of the hygienist.
Patients with dry mouth or a history of radiation to the head and neck are at a higher risk for decay. For this reason fluoride varnish can be applied to the teeth at the patients cleaning visit. Fluoride can also be used for sensitivity. Not only can fluoride be applied chairside but if the patient is at risk there can also be a fluoridated prescription toothpaste that is used at home to help keep the patient at less risk.
Interdental brushes are used to help keep larger spaces in between the teeth clean. Interdental brushes or also known as proxy brushes come in many sizes from Petite to Extra Wide. These brushes can reach in spaces where your toothbrush and floss cant.
Floss threaders are like a needle and thread. They are used when traditional floss or floss pick can not be used. They are used on patients with braces, bonded retainers or a crown and bridge.
Waterpiks are very useful tools when it comes to keeping your mouth clean. In addition to brushing and flossing using a Waterpik can help flush out any extra debris.
